https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10128

This article is devoted to yoik, the traditional vocal music of the Sámi people. It explains what yoiks are and what meaning they have in Sámi culture as an expression of remembrance and emotions. The study analyses the lyrics of three yoiks about a waterfall on the Kautokeino river called Gievdneguoika, and examines how they express emotions. It also considers what these yoiks and the literary techniques they rely on say about the cultural values and attitudes of the Sámi people.
Violeta Basa

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10129

This article is devoted to the representation of extreme weather as a result of global warming in Ingrid Tørresvold’s Hilsen Ruth [Regards, Ruth]. Published in 2020, the novel imagines the effects of a severe heatwave over Norway, focusing on 39-year-old Ruth, who perceives the crisis as an opportunity to deal with personal problems. Considering the book as a realistic narrative of climate change, I examine the fictional representation of extreme weather as an impending risk and discuss the air conditioner as a symbol of anthropogenic global warming. I also discuss the affective dimension of the novel, drawing attention to the main character’s experience of the crisis caused by the unusual heat. Finally, my analysis seeks to show how Hilsen Ruth addresses climate change as a phenomenon intertwined with individual and cultural perceptions.
Georgiana Bozîntan

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10130

Sigrid Undset published the historical novel entitled Olav Audunssøn (The Master of Hestviken) relatively shortly after the international success of her trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter. The reception process of the second work was strongly affected by the reader’s expectation horizon, which turned out to be inadequate in view of the complexity of artistic values of the text and its psychological aspects. The article focuses on the structure of the fiction and points out the function of so called romantic irony. It also provides a brief overview of Czech translations of Undset’s works.
Miluše Juříčková

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10131

In the second part of my article on Inghill Johansen’s short prose, the focus is on the conception of body memory. Past and present are merged in the body, and hence the narrator’s melancholy, if we follow Sigmund Freud’s conception of melancholy in his famous “Mourning and Melancholia” from 1917. According to Freud, a melancholiac is a person who identifies with the object he or she has lost. Furthermore, as Johansen’s narrator compares her life and writing with a black hole, she can be interpreted as a melancholiac who uses the black hole metaphor to formulate a poetology. The last part of this article tries to explain Johansen’s enigmatic texts as part of her poetological strategy.
Thomas Seiler

2023-12-152023-12-157(27)184187Analyse av kamp tendenser i kvinnefigurers konstruering i Cecilie Løveids dramatikk
https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10159

The article explores camp tendencies in female characters in selected plays by Cecilie Løveid. In this study, I consider camp as a political phenomenon. Thanks to hyperbolisation or breaking the rules of the androcentric world, camp allows excluded individuals to regain their voice. Due to their exaggerated nature, camp strategies particularly emphasise the problem of objectification of marginalised groups. Camp depiction of fundamental problems enables Løveid to deconstruct traditional social norms. In her work, camp becomes visible in thematic areas related to the construction of female characters or transgressions of stereotypically understood gender. Therefore, it is essential to include Cecilie Løveid, known for her socially critical literature, in this discourse.
Anna Artwich

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10160

The article examines the history of the Icelandic linguistic purism (málhreinsunarstefna). For many years Icelanders have been known for their conservative attitude to any kind of foreign influence on their language. The country’s official language policy is to preserve the Icelandic language in an untouched form. To achieve that, Icelanders avoid borrowing words or grammatical structures from other languages. The study provides an outline of different undertakings aimed at preserving the Icelandic language, and presents the most important Icelandic organisations involved in language planning and key legal regulations in this area. It also describes Icelanders’ attitude to the impact of the English language.
Agata Michnowska

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10135

The aim of this study is to investigate the criminal discourse of the Sweden Democrats through an ideational analysis of their criminal policy programme. The study applies an analytical tool drawing on systemic functional grammar. Analysing nuclear participants and using readability index, the article explores the question of how model readers are constructed in the text. The conclusion is that the Sweden Democrats focus mostly on material processes that refer to physical violence (very rarely on other types of crime). The party’s view on criminal policy is focused on support for the police force. The Sweden Democrats’ descriptions largely adopt the perspective of crime victims, while the model reader is a law-abiding and well-educated citizen.
Daniel Gaszewski

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10132

Ingmar Bergman was a filmmaker deeply immersed in the tradition of both classical and silent cinema. It can be inferred from his comments that Victor Sjöström played a particularly important role in his work. This article attempts to trace Sjöström’s influence on the film Wild Strawberries, on which, according to Bergman, he was to have a considerable impact. The study juxtaposes selected elements of Sjöström’s works with the film in focus and presents a broader cinematic-historical context to show Bergman’s profound connection with the silent film era and the significant role that Sjöström played in his development.
Roman Aleksander Kraiński

https://czasopisma.bg.ug.edu.pl/index.php/SS/article/view/10133

Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was the Nordic region’s leading sculptor in the first part of the nineteenth century, and exerted a strong influence on Nordic and European sculpture. He is said to have revived the relief form, and was called the “Patriarch of Basreliefs”. The relief tradition was weak in Norway during late classicism, and tondi (relief medallions) were few. The article is devoted to a recently rediscovered tondo by the Norwegian late classicist Ole Henriksen Fladager (1832–1871), and discusses the extent to which the relief is influenced by Bertel Thorvaldsen’s tondi.
Åse Markussen
