Abstract

A number of studies that aim to prove the value of having women on boards look at the association between ratio of women on boards and firm financial performance (see the survey Kirsch, 2017). The presence of women in governing bodies facilitates the decision-making process, which may positively influence company’s results. Higher presence of women in governing bodies means more effective supervision and a better risk management system, which in effect brings an improvement of financial results. Boards which are more balanced from the point of view of gender representation also mean better corporate governance and a higher degree of observation of ethical standards, which may have an impact on company’s results. The aim of the paper is to examine what factors determine the presence of women in the bodies of listed companies in Poland. The results of statistical surveys show that the share of women in the bodies of companies listed on the WSE differs significantly depending on the size of the company, the industry in which it operates, the size of the company’s governing bodies and the structure of shareholders, in particular the type of dominant shareholder.
