Abstract

The article presents main conclusions from the literature review regarding understanding terms “competences” and “competence potential”. The importance of non-professional experiences and social roles in the development of competencies of women’s and men’s were emphasized. Problems related to the assessment of women’s and men’s competences due to the influence of stereotypes were pointed out. The results of own study on competencies were presented, findings allowed to confirm the differences in the self-assessment of the of women and men competency potential. Results are consistent with the insights of other authors. However, it was also pointed out that the results should be interpreted with caution. The observed differences may result not only from actual differences in the competences of women and men, but also may be influenced by stereotypes. Despite these doubts, it is obvious that when planning the strategies of using the potential of women and men, observed differences noted should be ignored.
