Celem opracowania jest próba znalezienia odpowiedzi na pytanie o istnienie różnic między handlem międzynarodowym mierzonym wartością brutto (tradycyjnie) i handlem mierzonym wartością dodaną oraz o ich stopień. Dokonana analiza pozwala stwierdzić, że oba rodzaje handlu wiele łączy, ale i wiele dzieli. Z jednej strony, trzej najwięksi uczestnicy handlu nie zmieniają się, bez względu na to, w jaki sposób mierzony jest handel, z drugiej – w zależności od metody jego pomiaru – zasadniczo zmieniają się zajmowane przez nich miejsca (np. pozycja Chin). W latach 1995–2011 nastąpiło zwielokrotnienie wartości handlu międzynarodowego (w tym handlu zagranicznego Polski), przy czym handel wartością brutto wzrósł bardziej niż handel wartością dodaną. Na skutek kryzysu gospodarczego w 2009 r. nastąpił jednak znaczący spadek wartości zarówno handlu wartością dodaną, jak i handlu brutto. Spadek tego drugiego był jednak silniejszy. Ponadto w badanym okresie widać spadek relacji między wartością handlu mierzonego wartością dodaną a wartością handlu brutto – w przypadku Polski spadek ten jest większy niż w handlu światowym.
