Élie Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, developed in his work a sustained reflection on silence, memory, and testimony. This article examines Night and The Jews of Silence, arguing that his writing is not structured by a simple opposition between silence and speech, but by a dynamic of refusal. The hypothesis is that this refusal operates as an evolving process, from the witness’s mutism to a prophetic and engaged voice. The study combines a comparative approach (Levi, Kertész) with a theoretical framework (Blanchot, Levinas, Ricoeur, Arendt, Derrida). It identifies four figures of refusal: literary refusal, refusal of silence, refusal of resignation, and refusal of oblivion. The analysis shows that these forms produce both a poetics and an ethics of resistance, where writing becomes memory and responsibility.
