Résumé

In his short story, Le Chef-d’oeuvre inconnu, Balzac explores the impossible quest for artistic perfection through the character of Frenhofer, a painter obsessed with completing his work. The text juxtaposes the finished and the unfinished work, highlighting that the sketch or the non finito can better convey life than the completed painting. Faithful to realism style, Balzac multiplies descriptions and pictorial references to the point of saturation, while reflecting on the rivalry between Ingres's drawing and Delacroix's color. The painting's final chaos – a fog of colors from which a single perfect foot emerges – symbolizes the painter's failure and the paradoxical triumph of art. By equating the novelist's work with the painter’s one, Balzac makes disorder, incompleteness, and « nothingness » the true source of creative genius.
