Abstract

The article examines the contexts in which lexemes from the lexical-semantic field of surprise are used in the Polish Millennium Bible. The subject of interest is lexical means of naming surprise-related emotions, lexical labels applied to phenomena regarded as unexpected, and metaphorical terms expressing conventionalised symptoms of surprise. The analysis has shown that lexemes naming emotions from the group related to surprise are widely represented in the biblical texts, and can refer to a variety of situational stimuli, including those of a metaphysical nature and others concerning people’s everyday lives. As a result of the analysis of attestations of the use of this vocabulary, thematic constraints on the causes of the feelings of surprise denoted by particular lexemes may be identified. The observations also lead to the conclusion that the use of the analysed vocabulary is subject to limitations related to the literary genres to which particular biblical texts belong.
