Anna Laetitia Barbauld (1743-1825) jest jedną z wczesnych autorek religijnych hymnów dla dzieci, zapoczątkowanych w początkach XVIII wieku przez Isaaca Wattsa. W pisanych prozą hymnach Barbauld najważniejszym tłem przestrzennym i motywem tematycznym jest przyroda, która stanowi punkt wyjścia do ukazywania dziecku wszechobecności i potęgi Boga. Dydaktyczne utwory Barbauld odwołują się do racjonalności dziecięcego odbiorcy, ale ukazanie otwartego na metafizykę dziecka w jedności z naturą wpisuje się w nurty charakterystyczne dla romantyzmu.
