Abstrakt

The article deals with relation between dominating discourse and marginal histories on the example of Mariusz Sieniewicz’s novel titled The City of Glass Elephants. Narrative allows us to understand the world, each other and forms the basis for our identity and subjectivity. But at the same time narration distorts, excludes, puts people, ideas and things on the outer fringes of the central theme of the story. The Author claims that we can understand the Sieniewicz’s novel as a war between grand narrative and private histories, between the city and its outskirts, power and freedom, knowledge and invention, rationality in a narrow sense and indeterminate ways of thinking. People excluded from the city by its organizing discourse are shown by the author as rebels whose private subversive histories can reveal an ideology of main story and as visionaries who try to live on the fringes understood as a space of freedom.
