Abstrakt

The paper discusses the rhetoric strategies of Bessarion’s two speeches addressed to the German rulers at the Nuremberg Congress in 1460 and focuses on quotations and motives taken from ancient literature. It seems that in his orations cardinal Bessarion equally refers to The Bible and the works of Church Fathers, yet also to the texts of Greek philosophers and historians of ancient Rome. Exhorting for a crusade against the Turks, Bessarion speaks to the German rulers as to the defenders of the Catholic faith and the heirs of the Roman Empire.
