Abstrakt

The content issued on ancient coins was, in many cases, an ideological reference to the figure of the emperor and his widespread political or social activities. The purpose of this article is to highlight the way in which the rulers of Rome – the most powerful men in the Roman Empire – propagandised the need to supply the city with grain. For almost two and a half centuries of the empire, the mint in Rome issued numismats with the image of an annona. There is some doubt about the absence of such depictions in the catalogue of The Roman Imperial Coinage in the section on the Emperor Trajan.
