Abstract

The following article is dedicated to the rebirth of traditional politheist faith in Mari El Republic, which is a part of Volga Region within Russian Federation. The author presents an outline of the history and culture of Finno-Ugric Mari ethnos and describes their unique polytheistic religion. This native cult having its roots in Finno-Ugric mythology has survived numerous christianization and atheist campaigns to become one of the fundaments of cultural and national rebirth in 80s and 90s of the 20th century in Mari El Republic The article describes the contemporary Mari polytheist religion and its influence on the political life of Volga Region.
