Abstrakt

The text discusses the history and significance of linguistic initiatives such as the Word of the Year selections, presenting the methodology and results of selected polls, as well as describing the impact of language on shaping social and academic identity. Particular attention is given to the organization process and the results of the first Sinological Word of the Year 2024 poll at the University of Gdańsk. An analysis of the results shows that the participants, both those associated with sinology and those outside this community, preferred neologisms and loanwords, often with a humorous connotation. The study highlights the role of language in integrating the academic community and points to the potential for further development of such initiatives in Poland.
