This article examines the process of acculturation of Buddhism in China and its impact on the social and political structures of the imperial state. It shows how an egalitarian and universalist doctrine originating in India was adapted to the realities of the Confucian–Legalist order, gaining the support of both the ruling elites and the broader population. The text highlights the factors behind Buddhism’s success during periods of political fragmentation, as well as the mechanisms later used by the state to control and instrumentalize religion. Particular attention is given to the subordination of the Buddhist clergy to imperial authority and to the use of the concept of sacral ruler (cakravartin) to strengthen dynastic legitimacy. The article argues that although Buddhism carried egalitarian ideals, in practice it contributed to consolidating and sacralizing China’s model of absolute monarchy.
