Abstrakt

The coup d’état of 1 February 2021 in Myanmar triggered a reaction from the member states of two international regional organizations: the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), to which Myanmar belongs. These organizations recognized the principle of non-interference as a vital element in mutual international relations. However, in the case of the Burmese coup, this principle took precedence over other declared values such as ensuring regional security and protecting human rights. This article demonstrates that the principle of non-interference defined the actions of ASEAN and BIMSTEC between 2021 and 2025, which consequently led to the recognition of Myanmar’s non-democratically elected regime by the states of the region within international structures.
