Economic integration in East Asia is a multifaceted process that differs significantly from the model of integration characteristic of the European Union. The region is dominated by an approach based on functional integration, which involves selective liberalization of trade and investment while maintaining a limited level of regulatory harmonization and institutionalization of cooperation. The article applies the classical theory of regional economic integration as an analytical tool to compare and classify selected institutional and organizational forms of integration in East Asia. The analysis covers the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which differ in their scope of liberalization, degree of institutionalization, and the nature of economic cooperation in the region.
