Abstract

The article presents a study of students at Polish higher-education institutions that assessed their investment knowledge and awareness. The survey enables evaluation of both the current level of students’ factual knowledge and their self-assessment of investment skills. This inquiry is important given the strategic significance of the student cohort for the nation: as new entrants to the labour market, they should possess strong financial literacy, which can contribute to national development—for example, through higher tax revenues from capital gains or by making well-informed investment decisions in entities of strategic importance to the state. The aim of the article is to examine students’ investment awareness using a questionnaire composed of a knowledge test and self-assessment items (objective and subjective measures). The results indicate that students tend to overestimate their investment knowledge, while their actual performance is statistically average or weak. A noteworthy finding is that, although students express a readiness to improve their investment knowledge and awareness, they perceive a lack of opportunities to do so.
