This text is an edition of an archival source, which is a set of memoirs entitled “August 1980 seen from Rome by Pomeranian pilgrims.” These memoirs were submitted to a contest organized by the Gdansk Branch of the Polish Sociological Society in 1981, concerning accounts of the strike in the Gdansk Shipyard. The contest was initiated by Professor Marek Latoszek. The edition was based on the methodology presented in the publishing manual entitled Editing Historical Sources by Janusz Tandecki and Krzysztof Kopiński. The text is accompanied by an introduction, which briefly presents the most important events leading directly and indirectly to the outbreak of the strike of August 1980. The purpose of this edition is to present the memoirs of Wojciech Wiła, a pilgrim staying in Rome in 1980, which provide a source for research into the history of the August strike. Wojciech Wiła’s memoirs contain a different perspective on the Gdańsk Shipyard strike from that which has been presented hitherto in the relevant literature.
