This article describes a two – tier Croatian banking system, which includes the Croatian National Bank as the central bank and commercial banks, savings banks and savings housing banks. Part one covers the transition process from socialism to capitalism in Croatia and the process of shaping the banking sector after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Next part the author focuses on the characteristics of the National Bank of Croatia, its objectives, functions and organizational structure and the types and classification of banks operating in Croatia.
