Rolling stock used in intermodal freight transport

Abstract

Analyzing the presented data on the rolling stock, it should be stated that it’s currently sufficient and can cope with the accepted stream of containers. The data contained in the article show that in this period there was an increase in investment in electric locomotives, which are slowly replacing diesel locomotives, and there was also a noticeable increase in the number of railroad platforms of the (S) series by about 2,000 wagons. In the 2020–2030 perspective, with the projected level of 10–15% of the total weight of cargo transported using intermodal transport, further investments in the wagon rolling stock will be necessary, and hence the purchase of further wagon platforms adapted to the transport of containers. It will also be necessary to intensively modernize the railway line and point infrastructure, as well as expand and modernize the existing intermodal terminals, enabling the insertion of longer trains, reaching even 730 m ‐750 m. With a length of 730 m, you can go to Warsaw Praga, but due to the limitations of the track length in sea container terminals, such an operation is impossible.
