Assessment of the activities of the National Bank of Poland during the coronavirus pandemic
Keywords:
monetary policy, quantitative easing, anti-crisis measures, inflationAbstract
The economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic led to an immediate reaction from central banks in developed countries. Because of low-interest rates, central banks had to resort to unconventional monetary policy tools assuming the use of changes in the volume and structure of central banks' balance sheets. The negative effects of the monetary expansion were already noticed in 2021 when the inflation rate exceeded the MPC's inflation target. This leads to the conclusion that anti-crisis measures should be accompanied by a policy mitigating the negative effects of monetary expansion. A temporary boost to the economy through quantitative easing may prove disadvantageous in the long run, as it will not offset the subsequent adverse effects of these tools. The article aimed to diagnose the monetary policy of the National Bank of Poland in the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic.
