Abstrakt

Bruno Schulz’s Messiah is one of the most sought after manuscripts of all times. Schulz hinted at working on it on many occasions. Although the novel was supposed to unlock the author’s “iron capital of the spirit,” there is no proof that it was ever written. This paper is a detailed examination of Schulz correspondence thanks to which we can see Messiah’s birth: both the Messiah who existed in Schulz’s imagination and the one who was to appear on paper. The journey through the letters is very sad indeed, because one can observe the author’s inner struggle which leads to his spiritual death many years before the physical one. This paper tells a story of Schulz’s challenges (lack of time, unrealistic expectations, and his poor mental health), being also an attempt to familiarize the reader with a sad conclusion – Messiah does not exist.
