In the article, the author is looking into the image of the Greek god Poseidon in the novels written in the Comnenian era. The author analyzes three out of four novels written in that time: Drosilla and Charicles by Niketas Eugenianos, Rodante and Dosikles by Theodore Prodromos, and Hysmine and Hysminias by Eustathios Makrembolites. The article starts with abrief introduction of the history and the characteristics of this literary genre, what is more the author raises the issues of its name. In the rest of the article the scholar analyzes consecutive chapters of the above-mentioned novels and comparables them to ancient works in which the Greek god of the sea appears. Thus, the author reconstructs the image of the deity portrayed in the novels of the Comnenian era. Simultaneously the author studies what is the role of deity in those texts. A particularly important part of the article is the analysis of Poseidon’s attitude towards the title characters from Rodante and Dosycles as well as Hysmine and Hysminias.
