Abstract

The article deals with one of the aspects concerning the funeral rite of the Baltic population – the issue of horse remains in cemeteries and human graves, which included elements of the horse order. The chronological scope of the work includes the Great Migration Period and the early Middle Ages. Based on several of the most representative examples of objects, I have attempted to compare the aspect of treatment of the deceased in Eastern and Western Balts that interests me. I divided the text into three basic categories: independent deposits of the horse remain in sepulchral positions, human graves in direct stratigraphic relation with horse remains, and human graves equipped with elements of the horse order and not containing horse remains.
