In spring 1946, as the result of the merger of local transport companies, the Międzykomunalne Zakłady Komunikacyjne Gdańsk–Gdynia [Gdańsk–Gdynia Intermunicipality Transport Company] was established. The company covered the area of the present Tri-City and directly originated from war-time German arrangements (Verkehrsbetriebe Danzig Gotenhafen AG – VDG, founded in 1942). MZK GG employed in 1948 over two thousand employees and operated until the end of 1950. From its beginnings until the end of 1948, it was under the direction of Marian Madeyski (1905–1978). His achievements in re-establishing the transportation system on the coast of the Baltic were considerable; coping with numerous problems and having few resources at his disposal, he re-activated an effectively operating organization, embracing not only tram, bus, and trolleybus lines, but also shipping and ferry lines. After leaving Gdańsk in 1949, he began an academic career (gaining the title of professor in 1971). He was a lecturer at the Szkoła Główna Handlowa in Warsaw [Warsaw School of Economics] and the first President of the Komitet Transportu Samochodowego [Transportation Industry Committee] of PAN [the Polish Academy of Sciences]. For several years, he also managed the Instytut Transportu Samochodowego [Motor Transport Institute] in Warsaw.
