Abstrakt

In this essay John Hartley translates the classical question posed by Richard Hoggart about the uses of literacy into the question of the cultural and political uses of television. However, the crucial question concerns rather the meta-theoretical question of how to study television as a subject of research. Hartley demonstrates the complexity of the very object of study as well as the necessity of interdisciplinary character of research in that area. He also surveys the history of treating television as cultural policy within cultural studies and calls for a new methodological approach towards television treated and studied as culture and as politics.
