In her analysis of three TV series: Neko Zamurai (2013–2015), A Man and His Cat (2021), and The Way of the Househusband (2020–), the author of the article refers to the crisis of traditional masculinity in contemporary Japan. The correlation between the crisis and the cat theme presented in these series is the main topic of the text. Three TV series analysed in the article use this popular theme to redefine masculinity in different ways. Contemporary Japan’s feline fascination serves as a gender-neutral territory, where feminine meets masculine, tradition is accompanied by (post)modernity, and kawaii aesthetics mixes with sophisticated culture.
