The article traces a masochistic trope that interlinks the biographies of two artists – Schulz and Beksiński. By engaging with preserved testimonies, it undertakes a deconstruction of the masochistic myths surrounding both figures, thereby uncovering the unexpected entanglements between ostensibly autonomous – both literary and visual – works. It also explores their complex relations to masochism, foregrounding the role of maternal and feminine figures in shaping masochistic imaginaries, and demonstrates how these dynamics facilitated the emergence of distinctive masochistic legends that continue to inform the reception of both artists.
