„Autentyczny poeta nieznany w Ameryce” – Hannah Arendt czyta Brunona Schulza

Abstrakt

This essay reconstructs the moment when Hannah Arendt first encountered Bruno Schulz, reading an English typescript of Sanatorium under the Hourglass for Schocken Books in 1947. Her report—at once editorial triage and critical meditation—reveals how a refugee intellectual sought to naturalize an unknown Polish Jewish fabulist into the fragile postwar canon. Arendt discerns in Schulz a «first-rate» visionary whose metamorphic prose defies easy lineage, even as she warns against the paralyzing temptation of Kafka›s influence. By tracing the afterlives of the Moss translation, the essay recovers a prehistory of Schulz›s Anglophone reception and illuminates Arendt›s own moral sense of literary «duty»: the rescue of a singular voice from the wreckage of its age.
