The article analyses how the image of women was created in the press during the Stalinist period. It shows that the official discourse presented women in socialist countries as fully liberated, equal and politically aware, while pointing to Soviet women as a model of emancipation. At the same time, an extremely negative image of the situation of women in capitalist countries was constructed, emphasising their alleged economic exploitation, lack of maternity protection and limited access to education. At the same time, the article points out that despite the declared equality in public and media space, there was a clear dominance of men – both in power structures and in newspaper editorial offices, as well as in the symbolic sphere. Emancipation was presented within the limits set by state ideology. The article argues that the black-and-white scheme contrasting socialism with capitalism served propaganda purposes and masked the real gender inequalities present in the system.
