Abstract

One of the characteristic properties of popular culture is its diversity, polymorphism, and multilayeredness, resulting, among other things, from the unrestrained inclusion of virtually all manifestations of human activity. A particularly conducive field for pop-cultural inclusion is any activity that, in one respect or another, stands out markedly – something unusual, extraordinary, exceptional, exceeding ordinary measures and boundaries. Popular culture builds upon deviations from norm. Ideas that surpass others, rise above them or fail to reach their level. As such, it attracts and holds attention; it intrigues, arouses curiosity, exerts a magnetic pull, shocks, sustains suspense, draws one in, terrifies, and fascinates. In the authors’ view, an emblematic example of inclusion understood in this way is provided by the pop-cultural fortunes of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), a representative of high culture and a creator exceptional in every respect, indeed “the greatest of humanity’s musical geniuses” (Witold Lutosławski). In the present reflections, drawing on examples from pop-rock music, advertising, and cinema, we seek to answer the following question: what else – besides Bach’s exceptional exceptionalness – causes popular culture to draw his oeuvre into its vortex?
