Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience many problems in their everyday functioning. Intolerance of uncertainty may be one of the risk factors determining the occurrence of challenging behavior under conditions of uncertainty; however, there is little indigenous research addressing this problem. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the behavioral problems of people with ASD is crucial to developing effective therapeutic interventions. The aim of the ongoing explorations is to understand uncertainty intolerance and its relationship to behavioral problems in individuals with ASD. The study involved 6 mothers of children with autism. A qualitative research strategy was applied and a qualitative problem-focused interview method was used. The data were subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis. Conclusions from the conducted analyses permit to assume that the studied people on the autism spectrum are characterized by intolerance of uncertainty, which significantly impacts on their behavior in various life situations and also on the lives of their relatives.
