Abstract

Introduction: Studies conducted so far confirm the relations between the sense of coherence and psychical disorders. Locus of control plays a significant role in the etiology and picture of anorexia and bulimia nervosa as well as affective disorders. Therefore, it seems interesting to look for the relations between depression on the one hand and the sense of coherence and locus of control on the other in women with eating disorders.

Research aim: The study was aimed to identify the connections between the sense of coherence and locus of control on the one hand and the assessment of increase of depression on the other in women with anorexia and bulimia.

Method: Totally, 100 women were studied, including 50 with anorexia and 50 with diagnosed bulimia, in accordance with DSM-V classification (2015). The investigated persons did not differ with regard to the age. The study made use of Antonovsky’s Orientation to Life Questionnaire (SOC), the Questionnaire for Sense-of-Control Assessment (Delta) and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D).

Results: In women with eating disorders depression was negatively connected with the general sense of coherence and understandability. A negative correlation additionally occurred in anorectic patients between affective disorders and the sense of manageability, while in the group of women with diagnosed bulimia a negative relation occurred only between understandability and depression. In the group of women with eating disorders, mostly in women with bulimia, depression was correlated to the external sense of locus of control.
