This publication presents a translation of the first four chapters of the 1933 English edition of Nathan Söderblom’s The Nature of Revelation. The translation is accompanied by the translator’s notes explaining the historical, religious studies, and terminological context of the text. In these chapters, Söderblom sets forth his own conception of the religion of revelation and distinguishes it from the religion of nature and the religion of culture. He also engages critically with evolutionary theories of the development of religion. He argues that the religion of revelation constitutes a distinct type of religious experience that cannot be explained solely in terms of cultural development.
