In India, before regaining the independence, many temples were founded to implement the ideas of Indian social and religious reformers who propagated the vision of reformed Hinduism. For these purpose efforts were also made to develop a new form of the national Hindu temple (Hindu Rashtra Mandir). This trend also includes temples known as Birla Mandir funded by successive generations of the Birla family. All of them function, as the authors of the paper claim, as forms of “cultural media” designed to build an uniform Indian identity based on the created ideal of āryadharma. In the article, on the example of the New Vishvanath Temple (Birla Mandir in Varanasi), the mechanisms of reinventing tradition used by the creators of the idea are shown.
