The aim of this article is to compare the status and methods of introducing additional names of towns and streets in minority and regional languages in the European Union countries and, more broadly in the Visegrad Group countries (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland). The comparison of their naming policies and practices has showed that there is no uniform pattern in the introduction of bilingual place-names. While in the Western European countries they were associated with regional movements and authorities (and are practically limited only to the names of the towns and villages), in the Central European countries they are regulated at the constitutional or statutory level which often have given a more complete chance of their occurrence on the designated territory due to their extension possibilities also to other official objects and place-names. In the article, I will try to show the importance of the minority naming in creating a new linguistic landscape of these societies through activities enabling minorities to have a wider and more visible presence in the public space.
