Abstract

The paper reflects on the experiences of implementing institutional changes related to the promotion of gender equality in higher education institutions. As such, it aligns with the considerations and latest trends in the way in which scientific institutions are organized and we refer to the social context of doing science within international and national grants. These changes are based on the latest research and expertise in diversity and inclusion management. Achieving gender equality requires structural changes and long-term, often bottom-up activism of various individuals and groups who want to build an inclusive academic environment. At the same time, support for such changes (substantive and financial) is offered by European Union funds, through which universities can learn from each other and share good practices and as a effect increase their scientific recognition by triggering more innovation. This has an impact on the introduction of Europe-wide standards related to the creation and implementation of Gender Equality Plans. This article aims to present some selected conclusions from conducting such activities at the University of Gdańsk. Seven important cutting-edge conditions necessary to strengthen gender equality are proposed and discussed.
