Risk perception in Maldives. How climate change is seen by one of the most vulnerable communities?
Abstract
Maldives is considered one of the countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Consisting of small-size coral islands, they can be soon inundated as a result of sea-level rise, which is one of the effects of global warming. This provokes questions on the local view on this threat and adaptation strategies being undertaken. Qualitative research conducted in Maldives shows, however, that their inhabitants deny scientific facts predicting imminent flooding of the islands. Cultural risk theory provides explanation on possible reasons for such state of the matter. Analysis of the cultural context allows exploring how Maldivians prioritize threats. This, in turn, enables a better understanding of the perception of climate change from a local perspective, which is necessary when designing effective adaptation policies.
