Abstract

The dynamic development of dog-assisted therapy worldwide has led to the establishment of numerous global organizations that approach this form of animal-assisted intervention in a holistic manner. This has significantly contributed to its further expansion, supporting children, adolescents, and adults. The primary aim of this qualitative study, conducted in 2024, was to explore and understand the individual experiences of participants in dog-assisted therapy sessions, which are largely shaped by the types of activities undertaken during the sessions. The research employed semi-structured, in-depth interviews, allowing for an in-depth understanding of the nature and types of activities preferred by participants in dog-assisted therapy, as well as the various barriers encountered during their implementation. These barriers stemmed from diverse sources. The findings clearly indicate that participants’ engagement in the activities proposed during dogassisted therapy sessions is strongly influenced by their personal preferences regarding the nature of the activities and the level of closeness (both physical and emotional) with the therapy dog. The conclusions drawn from this study are of significant theoretical and practical value. They offer a comprehensive overview of the most commonly chosen form of dog-assisted therapy sessions “Meetings with a Dog” and provide numerous practical guidelines for therapists conducting such sessions.
