Depression co-occurs with eating disorders affecting different aspects of the sick person’s functioning. A significant role in the etiology and picture of disorders is played by the sense of selfesteem and stress management. From this perspective studying the relations between self-esteem and stress management styles on the one hand and increase of depression on the other in people with eating disorders seems of interest.
Research aim: The aim of the undertaken studies was to search for the relations between increase of depression symptoms and the general sense of self-esteem in women with eating disorders on the one hand and the assessments concerning significant areas of their functioning and selfesteem and stress management. Method: The study totally comprised 100 women, including 50 with anorexia and the same number of women with diagnosed bulimia, according to the diagnostic criteria of DSM-V (2015). The groups did not differ significantly considering the age. The research made use of the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Inventory (MSEI), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) by Endler and Parker and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D).
Results: The analyses indicate significant relations existing between self-esteem and stress management on the one hand and depression in women with eating disorders on the other. In women with anorexia depression is linked to the assessment of social and moral dispositions, whereas in patients with bulimia it is connected with self-esteem of one’s own effectiveness and physical attractiveness and social assessment. A decrease of depression symptoms in connected in women with eating disorders with a tendency to task-oriented coping with stress situations.
