Abstrakt

Religious art is an important facet of the work of Wacław Szczeblewski. This interesting Pomeranian artist made, having made his mark as a teacher in the interwar period, was a founder of the Pomeranian School of Fine Arts. Most of his work after 1945, and some before the war, was in interior design, both religious and secular. He created many wall paintings in Pomerania churches, among which only the interiors of Sts Peter and Pauls Church in Chmielno (Kashubia) have survived. Apart from the monumental painting, the artist designed stained-glass Windows and executed religious easel paintings. In Gdynia, Kashubia, and Kociewie we still come across traces of his work, both in churches and in private homes. A highly interesting complement to this picture of Szczehlewskis religious legacy comes from the designs for church interiors found in the artists home; these are often the sole documents of works that no longer exist. The present article publishes them for the first time. Since Szczeblewski took commissions for the decoration or renovation of religious interiors in the Kashubian style, some contemptuously called him a church painter’. He saw regionalism as more than hollow ornament. Fascinated by the Kashubian culture, Szczeblewski became a promoter of Pomeranian and Kashubia regionalism in art and was highly trusted by the local society.
