A brief account of the role played by physicists connected with the Nicolaus Copernicus University at Toruń (Aleksander Jabłoński, Alfons Kawski, Jerzy Grzywacz, Roman S. Ingarden, Jan Fiutak, Eugeniusz Czuchaj, Józef A. Heldt) during the creation of the physics center at the University of Gdańsk is given. Some aspects of long‑term cooperation between these universities that contributed to the development of research in the atomic, molecular and optical physics as well as in theoretical physics are also described.
