Textile seals are a multifaceted category of material historical source still underused in Polish historical writing. A type of these are the personal seals of merchants. The design of personal seals made it possible to make additional marks on them. The purpose of this article is to present epigraphic sources of this type, briefly describe their significance, and indicate the research possibilities they offer. The inscriptions made by merchants served mainly as an additional sign on cargoes to make it easier to distinguish them from each other. In the Middle Ages, these were usually engravings specifying the length of a piece of cloth, or the order marks of the cargo (numbers or letters). In the modern period, with the development of trade and the capacity of ships, the engravings were replaced by imprints of matrices containing numerical data relating to the goods being transported (cargo number, length of a piece of cloth). Indirectly, markings of this type make it possible roughly to distinguish imported personal seals from those that may be of local provenance.
