In the oeuvre of Peter Lachmann (born 1935 in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia) as a bilingual German-Polish poet, essayist and translator, the confrontation with his own language identity plays a central role. Language identity is understood as the representation of oneself through language, intertwined with national identity and how languages are perceived. In Lachmann’s biography, the search of this identification goes back to the paradoxically positive result of his originally painful encounter with a foreign language, Polish, as a child. The paper is based on the thesis that Lachmann develops the figure of a liminal person whose identity is subject to constant change and dynamism. The two languages: German and Polish constantly change their role or status. By analysing selected poems by Lachmann, both his complex language biography and the permanent conflict and tension between German and Polish are revealed.
