The article is devoted to the so-called third language (L3, neither source, nor target one) as a translation problem. Boris Akunin’s Russian historical detective novels, which abound in foreign intrusions in a dozen of tongues, have all been rendered into English by the same translator, Andrew Bromfield. This makes possible surveying how one professional deals with a multiple multilingual challenge, so the analysis focuses on the translator’s plurilingual competence (and its editorial contexts). Four languages were selected for discussion: French and Latin (handled skilfully), German (a site of errors in the target texts) and Japanese (which requires converting from the Cyrillic notation into the Western romanisation). The author also argues that the publishers’ care or lack thereof can significantly influence the quality of L3 presentation in the target text and that the translators should not be left to fend for themselves, as no plurilingual competence can be assumed universal.
