The present paper analyses the semantics of reduplication forms in Italian on the base of their communicative functions. Reduplication is a linguistic mechanism for the building of new word and new phrases based of repetition of language unities on all levels (reduplicated can be a phonem, morphem, lexem, phrase). Till now it was studied above all under morphological point of view. The focus of this paper are semantic aspects. Reduplication is a phenomenon which is considered a language universal, nevertheless its frequency, its morphological and semantic potential in the single languages are different. In the Italian ethnolect reduplication is an important instrument of the “emotive communication“, its main function is the modulation of affective intensity. In German and in Polish the semantics of Italian reduplication forms is given through other linguistic means, like the aspect of verb in Polish, graduating particles in German.
