This article is an attempt to analyze the problem of equivalence, especially the problem of its grading from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Using some examples, the author characterizes the classic (binary) approach to translation and confronts it with the most important elements of theory of categorization and creation of mental representations as well as semantic radial networks in both the mother tongue and the foreign language. The untranslatable cultural code, being the juxtaposition of socio‑cultural conditions of each linguistic system, blocks in the case of many expressions their complete translatability. The bilingual approach to the topic is also a voice in the discussion on linguistic universalism and relativism and an attempt to confront them with the research conducted in modern cognitive linguistics.
