Celem artykułu jest ukazanie roli Internetu w tworzeniu oraz kształtowaniu tych rodzajów, elementów i cech kapitału społecznego, które wpływają na zdrowotność populacji. Jak jest tworzony kapitał społeczny dla celów zdrowotnych przy użyciu nowego medium, jakim jest Internet? Sieć internetowa została przedstawiona jako instrument i narzędzie kreacji kapitału społecznego. Artykuł ma charakter poglądowy i nawiązuje do sieciowego ujęcia kapitału społecznego zaproponowanego przez francuskiego socjologa Pierre’a Bourdieu. W głównym nurcie rozważań zaprezentowano działania poświęcone tworzeniu „sieci społecznej” przez Internet, które stają się sposobem mobilizacji i dystrybucji kapitału na rzecz zwiększenia „bogactwa” form integracji i zasobów wspólnoty oraz pojedynczych osób, a w konsekwencji – wygenerowanie aktywności prozdrowotnych i zachowanie zdrowotności populacji. Ponadto, zwrócono uwagę na te obszary aktywności społecznej, które bezpośrednio są związane z polem medycznym. Są to: (1) korzystanie z Internetu przez pracowników ochrony zdrowia, głównie lekarzy i pielęgniarki, w celach komunikacji między- i wewnątrzprofesjonalnej, (2) wykorzystywanie możliwości Internetu w procesie komunikacji z pacjentem lub grupami pacjentów. Do omówienia zaproponowanych tematów posłużyły badania i opracowania teoretyczne dostępne w języku polskim i angielskim.
