Abstract

Challenging behaviors exhibited by individuals on the autism spectrum constitute a complex issue in educational, therapeutic, and caregiving contexts. The aim of the study was to explore the nature of behavioral problems, taking into account their type, prevalence, frequency, and severity. The research was conducted within a quantitative paradigm using the Behavioral Problems Inventory – Short Form developed by Rojahn. The study sample consisted of 144 individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, aged between 3 and 18 years. The findings indicate a high prevalence of challenging behaviors. Within the study group, 93.75% of participants exhibited stereotypical behaviors, 68.05% demonstrated aggressive or destructive behaviors, and 55.55% showed self-injurious behaviors. The article presents detailed results regarding the frequency and severity of specific behaviors, as well as their relationship with gender, age, and intellectual functioning. The identified behavioral issues highlight the need for in-depth assessment of individuals on the autism spectrum within educational settings, as well as the necessity of implementing targeted therapeutic and supportive interventions.
