Abstract

The Agenda for Sustainable Development assumes that the share of renewable energy sources in the global energy mix and the rate of increase in global energy consumption efficiency will be increased. In addition, efforts will be made to intensify international cooperation to facilitate access to research on clean energy and technology in the areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency and advanced and cleaner fossil fuel technologies. In view of the above, the energy future will require a number of adaptation measures. The purpose of this article is to present the use of energy by the transport sector in Poland and Central and Eastern European countries, with a special focus on the use of renewable energy sources.

Methodology – The paper used Eurostat data. Ward cluster analysis was used to group countries by renewable energy and biofuel consumption. Seventeen variables defining the level of final consumption of renewable energy sources and biofuels were used for non-linear ordering of countries in the form of a dendrogram. In addition, a standardization method was used, as a result of which the transformed values have a distribution with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1.

Findings – Transportation in Central and Eastern European countries consumes between 25% and 40% of total energy consumption, 90% of which is consumed by road transport. Renewable energy sources are used to the greatest extent in Romanian and Estonian transportation. Transport of the Central and Eastern European countries makes little use of renewable sources to meet energy needs.
